Responsive to the significant and dominate undulating forms of the Atkinson Street Boulevard tree-scape, the street is animated with a lively floating timber screen, with the main entry and circulation cores dramatically showcased to provide a safe, welcoming and accessible facility.
Atkinson Street car parking complex responds strongly to its context and juxtapositions itself by rebelling against the normal square and boxy appearance of most car park structures. The circulation cores are celebrated at the street edge and made transparent to maximise safety and visibility.
The Monash Council was delighted to see that the building reflected their environmental credentials and a number of key sustainability initiatives were employed, including:
- Natural ventilation to the entire carpark,
- External screening using FSC rated timbers
- Maximum use of potential natural light
- High efficiency LED light fittings
- Building management system for monitoring energy usage
- Rooftop solar panels sufficient to provide the buildings power consumption
The elements present result in a highly organic structure that responds to the leafy boundary of Atkinson Street, forming an undulating and modulating facade of significant interest and intrigue.
