Morwell Multi-Level Carpark
Rose Garden Inspiration
The project required the development of a design concept for a multi-level car park at the gateway to the city of Morwell. Situated on Commercial Road, the site is constrained and compact, presenting significant and varied neighbouring conditions.
The design celebrates the internationally acclaimed Centenary Rose Gardens and heightens their unique cultural importance for Morwell. Unique building forms stimulate a memorable arrival to the city that acknowledges community pride.
We were inspired by the rose garden and explored ways in which the main façade could represent rose petals. Using parametric modelling, we created an abstraction of multi coloured panels to the visual core ends of the building.
Adjacent to the rose garden, the multi coloured panels pick up on the Rose Garden colours providing a strong unifying gateway statement. At the other end opposite the civic centre, the petal colours reference the civic building timber tones and hues, as well as the street trees in Autumn. Together this provides 2 strong visual bookends that successfully disguise the humble carpark function and ensure it is a strong design contributor to the urban fabric of the city.
The solution demonstrates the importance of regionally inspired, contextual design concepts that positively contribute to the urban dialogue

“The project elegantly intertwines the Civic Centre and Rose Garden with a graceful design that is both articulated and slender”
